Web Technologies and software tools used at Kx2.us

So what's running this site? What's behind it making it tick?

Well, basically it's Apache Web Server v2.0.44, Jakarta Tomcat servlet/JSP container software v4.1.18, and Borland's Interbase v6.0 DBMS running on a Dell Dimension 8250.

Requests are received and web content returned via a DSL internet connection.

Since I live on an acreage in the country the power can, at times, be unreliable in terms of running a web server 24 X 7, hence I have an UPS

I registered my domain name from Aplus.net.  Sigh. . . .I don't know if I would recommend them. . . .I have since been using GoDaddy, and been happy with so far.

I am actually running my own DNS.  I am using BIND-PE.   I have also gotten secondary DNS service from a public DNS service - the Granite Canyon Group, LLC since .US TLDs require 2 DNSs.

This site is making use of the following technologies. . .

  1. HTML 4.0
  2. DHTML
  3. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS2) so the style of the entire web site can be easily changed without touching any html docs (what static ones there are here).
  4. Server-Side includes (SSI) to provide redundant content (navigation bar, footers,. .) so again, I have to only change things in one file when I need to make a change.
  5. Java Servlets, v2.3
  6. Java Server Pages (JSP), v1.2
  7. A relational database system offering stored procedures, triggers, JDBC, and many other features not available in desktop DBMSs
  8. Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) to allow the servlets to connect, write to, and query the database.

Here are the development tools I use/like:
